26th Annual Hazardous Waste Management Workshop

  • West Michigan Chapter of the Air & Waste Management Association (map)

Join us for the 26th Annual Hazardous Waste Management Workshop!

This workshop will include an introduction and review of technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive (TENORM) material origins, processing, and disposal in Michigan, including a summary of Public Acts 688 and 689. Jay Paquette, EGLE's Radioactive Materials Unit Supervisor, will also provide a brief review of other radioactive material disposal guidelines, including items like: residential smoke detectors, self-luminescent goods, materials containing unimportant quantities of source material, nuclear medicine patient waste, and generally licensed sources. Procedures and guidelines for how to respond to scrap metal and waste shipments containing unidentified radioactive sources will also be covered.

Bryan Stillwell and Marc McDonald from US Ecology will provide a detailed look at the art of Lab Packing, including preparing for a lab pack, waste classification and packaging, along with documentation, transportation, and disposal.

We will also be joined by Wade O’Boyle, EGLE's Grand Rapids District LIB and Hazardous Waste Inspector, for a division update. In addition, EGLE field inspectors and technical specialists will be on-site to answer any questions throughout the workshop, and there will be time for networking and exhibitor interaction during arrival, breaks, and lunch.

Presentations begin at 9:00 a.m. followed by a networking luncheon at noon. Attendees will also receive free access to the “Butterflies Are Blooming” exhibit at Meijer Gardens.
