Mission Statement
PURPOSE: Better understanding and awareness of the challenges that exist in air pollution control, waste processing and control, and environmental management programs among representatives of industry, government agencies, research personnel, educators, attorneys and consultants within the geographic area of the Chapter. The Chapter works toward promoting closer professional and personal relations among members of the Chapter and to further the mission and objectives of the Association.
GOALS & OBJECTIVES: As a non-profit, technical and educational organization, the Chapter’s main function is to disseminate information related to air and waste management and environmental quality management to its members and others in the geographic area of the Chapter. This includes updates on existing and proposed environmental regulations and legislation, various technical and managerial information, and materials for students. The Chapter produces a newsletter and holds conferences, workshops, and lunch/dinner meetings. A minimum of one technical conference is held each year. In disseminating information, it is the Chapter’s goal to maintain a neutral position in what is presented.
FOCUS & SCOPE: The Chapter’s main focus is on air quality and hazardous and toxic waste management, although we advocate a multi-disciplinary or cross-environmental media approach to addressing the many environmental challenges.
NETWORKING: The Chapter promotes and encourages camaraderie among environmental professionals to help foster a spirit of cooperation and unity, so together we may more effectively address the many environmental challenges we all face. This partnership includes, but is not limited to, government, academia, industry, and those in the private service industry, including consultants and attorneys. Our goal is to hold at least one social activity each year, such as a golf outing, dinner, attending a sports event, etc.
PARTICIPATORY: The Chapter seeks to maximize participation among its members throughout its geographical boundary in the various activities it sponsors. This includes seeking out members to serve on the Chapter’s Executive Board and various committees and/or to serve the organization by writing articles for the Chapter’s newsletter and/or actively participating in hosting a technical conference or other event by serving as a conference co-chair or as a conference committee member.
NEUTRAL FORUM: Through its publications and conferences, the Chapter provides a neutral forum where all viewpoints of an environmental management issue can be presented, including technical, scientific, economic, social, political, and public health aspects.
EDUCATION: The Chapter promotes environmental education by participating in various education outreach programs such as by providing educational materials and assistance to community schools. This includes furnishing publications to educators such as the Environmental Resource Guides published by AWMA. Chapter members are encouraged to participate in community science fairs and festivals. A scholarship program has been established for qualified college students in environmental studies.
APOLITICAL: No part of the Chapter’s direct or indirect activity consists of carrying on propaganda or otherwise attempting to influence legislation. The Chapter does not participate in or intervene in, including publication or distribution of statements, any political campaign on behalf of any candidate for public office.
MEMBERSHIP: Full members of the Chapter are members of the international Air & Waste Management Association that reside in west Michigan. Membership benefits include a newsletter, invitations to local events, and reduced fees for these events. The Chapter also has a Local Associate (LA) membership for individuals who desire affiliation with the Chapter only. Local Associates receive the newsletter, announcements, and local event discounts but cannot vote in A&WMA elections or hold offices. Contact the Chapter for more details.
